Hi Josh, I see it as a recognition of some concern about future. If today is all that counts then reputation hardly matters.

That makes sense. The past and the future always have some role to play. The question is how much in comparison to other societies.

I'm no expert on social media but it seems to me that people react very quickly when their reputation is tarnished in a pile-on and apologise. We could say the speed of life/social media brings the future into the now. Controversies that used to take days or weeks to develop now do so in an instant.

I think Hartog is making meta-observations of our society. Presentism distinguishes between other views of time that value the past or have hope in the future, both of which our society is low on.
